16th July 2017 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Friends,

We may think the parable of the sower and the seed is so well known and it is a good illustration of Jesus the teacher. Has it nothing to tell us? Let us listen again. This sower seems to be a most careless individual, he scatters seed (God’s Word) on the path, rocky ground, among thorns (bushes) and good soil. Anybody who takes an interest in growing something usually prepares the ground and even fertilizes it. Here was this individual throwing it around in– we might say- any old way.

But is this not how God’s Word is heard? Not just read formally in churches and ceremonial occasions but in classrooms, at home, in the cinema (rarely), in hospitals when panic sets in, and on the terrace of a football pitch when the star player misses a sitter or a penalty (I am sure your imagination has no difficulty there) etc etc. There are “professional “sowers i.e. those, not all clergy or sisters who you expect to hear the word and see it in action, but parents, teachers, children, strangers, a voice on the radio, all can be sowers. They have very little or no control of the ground the good word falls on. But neither did Jesus, we are reminded that many walked away and especially the official religious of the day.  The scribes and Pharisees reproached Jesus and challenged him, who do you think you are? Yes, our fixed ideas may not be fit for purpose, we will always be travellers and explorers. The Word (Jesus) is the way, but we often find another.

A Sunday school teacher asked her class, “What was Jesus’ mother’s name?” One child answered, “Mary”. The teacher then asked, “Who knows what Jesus’ fathers name was? A little kid said, ”Verge.” Confused the teacher asked, “Where did you get that? The kid said, “Well, you know, they are always talking about Verge n’ Mary.”

                                                                                    God Bless You All,

Fr John
