18th March 2018 Fifth Sunday of Lent

Dear Friends,

Lent is flying by and we are moving to the kernel of why we need this holy season, whatever the shop windows tell us. Jerusalem was always busy because of trade, but many more came at Passover time, among them some Greeks who wanted to ‘see’ Jesus. To go to see somebody may suggest a social call, curiosity or business, but it could not be called a meaningful encounter. Jesus quickly recognised the superficial meaning of this. “Now the hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified……unless a grain of wheat falls on the ground and dies (detaches itself from its source) it remains a single grain”, and no change is possible. But if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. No longer on the human level exchanging pleasantries, good conversation and hospitality, but the human becomes something else –“divine”. Something absolutely outside and beyond our wildest dreams or imagination, we now share in the divine life of the Father.

  • The Lent Reconciliation Service will take place on Wednesday at 8pm.
  • Next Sunday (Passion Sunday), Pope Francis has asked all countries and communities where the church has roots to pray for victims and survivors of abuse.
  • The Filipino YFC will not be continuing with music ministry at the 6pm masses on the 2nd Saturday of the month, due to work commitments. We shall miss them and wish them well.
  • Thank you so much for your responses so far to last week’s appeal for volunteers. Please keep them coming and if you have not yet got a yellow sheet collect one from the offertory table – “Your Parish Needs You!”
  • Please sponsor Jodie Stockford’s London Marathon Run on April 22nd. Forms on the porch table.

God Bless you all.

                                                          Fr John
